Review
Watch me Breathe is the third book in CE Johnson Elements of the Hearts series about Tana and Lucas. It’s a single-parent trope with a dash of suspense.
So I picked this book up on a whim, and I’m glad that I did. It was a quick read, but I loved every word of it. Lucas is a rugged man with a complicated past full of secrets. Tana is a widowed single mother just trying to make it each day. The two have instant chemistry, and though Tana is leery of starting something with Lucas, the attraction is there.
I wouldn’t say the book is insta-love, but it doesn’t mess around putting these two characters together. I really did enjoy every second of this book. It’s a fast read, but I love that it’s not packed with useless filler. There are characters from previous but books, but I didn’t feel that it was necessary to read those to keep pace. Now, of course, I am dying to go back and scour this author’s backlist. She’s gained a new fan!
I take my book reviewing very seriously so I debated for quite a bit of this was a 3 or a 4 star story. In the end, I went with 4, but I still want to mention a few things.
Here’s the positives: loved the storyline. Both main characters had had personal tragedies prior to meeting. They helped them bond over that and give love another try. They had an easy interaction that paved the way to romance.
Here’s the not so positives: there were quite a few scenes that felt like they were there just as a filler. They didn’t mean anything, they had nothing to do with anything, but they were there and they made me want to skip over them. There were quite a few side characters which I’m assuming are from previous books in the series. I didn’t read those and I was thrown off by the way they were introduced here, like I should’ve known who these people were and what they were talking about. If it wasn’t for that, this could’ve been a stand-alone book for sure.
