When was the last time I read a book that made my chest ache? Ache from the anger and pain and frustration and pure love the characters portray through the author’s words. If you had asked me before I read Return to Us, I would have said that it had been recent, I’ve read some great books, but I would have been wrong. This book made me aaaaaaache.
What I loved:
Truth time, second chance romance isn’t a top trope of mine. I usually shy away from it because it has flashbacks, which if you read my reviews, you know, I loathe their existence. In Return to Us, I loved the second chance romance. This author wrote it so beautifully that I had to love it. It was real, not the over-the-top, cheesy story that everyone writes. I felt Gray and Jessica’s story in my bones, and it was perfection.
I loved the connection with the Arrowwoods. The author does this very well and gives us enough of them that if you read their books, it’s a great tie-in, but it’s not confusing if you haven’t.
Overall I loved this book. I loved the Gray and Jessicas backstory. I loved that the author gave us the information we needed without half of the book being flashbacks. I loved the way the two of them come back together, fighting through their current issues. Did I get frustrated with them? Of course! But in any book, if you aren’t frustrated with the characters at one point, then the author isn’t giving you the range of emotions he or she should. Five big beautiful stars for the best kind of ache in my chest love story.
