Review
Sometimes taking a chance on a brand new author is rewarding, and it so was with Monty Jay’s debut release Love & Hockey. Only my second 6 star read of 2020, and I am absolutely smitten with Valor and Bishop!
Let me tell you that I am usually a big hater of flashbacks in books, but not Love & Hockey. I don’t know what writing magic Monty Jay used, but she places her flashbacks so perfectly that you never lose the story’s flow. And even though one chapter is from Valor’s perspective at 13, the next from Bishops at 23 and then back to Valor but at 17, it all makes sense.
I envied Valor’s passion and drive for everything she loved. Her character stayed true to herself from the first scene to the last. Her love for Bishop was never easy; if anything, it was a heavy burden to carry. I found that so relatable, especially when she was a young girl, and the love was unrequited. To the very end, Monty Jay doesn’t give these two an inch, and while it breaks you and breaks you again, the ending will bring you full circle.
Love & Hockey isn’t just another angsty romance; it’s a fate that consumes your soul.
